Q+A Interview with Kira Sutherland
Kira is an Australian naturopath, nutritionist, herbalist and astrologer. She divides her time between her clients, writing and lecturing on health, wellbeing and medical astrology. Known for her vibrant, straightforward teaching style, Kira has lectured in medical astrology in Australia and internationally. She is currently hibernating in the mountains of Canada with her family while writing and playing in nature as much as possible.
Q: How did you get introduced to astrology?
A: My Mum's best friend was an astrologer and she gave me a book about Aries for my 8th or 9th birthday. I was instantly hooked as it meant I could read all about myself! By 8th grade I was writing the astrology column for the school newspaper.
Q: How did you start your practice? And do you have any advice for the student who wants to begin to practice?
A: I formally studied astrology in my early 20’s when I was also studying Naturopathy and Nutrition so it all kind of blended together when I started practicing two days a week in a Wellness clinic. As for advice, I would say to take your time—be patient with yourself as it can take a while to really build up a good practice. The best advice I can give would be to do some free lectures and give a great handout with your clinic information and phone number on it so people can find you. I also found donating a few gift vouchers now and then for charity events is a great way to reach new audiences. I have one voucher that someone won at an auction and I can link at least 20 people that directly or indirectly came from that original voucher.
Q: Do you have any advice on how to study astrology?
A: Find a teacher that speaks to your soul. There are so many amazing teachers out there but every now and then you will find one that rocks your world—those are the ones you learn the most from. I find going to conferences amazing and I usually come away with one or two people that just blew me away with their lecturing style—those are the people I then pursue to learn from.
Q: What do you feel is the role of astrologer to the contemporary client?
A: This may be a different answer coming from me as I blend my Holistic health practice with my astrology. I use a mind/body medicine style of astrology to teach people about taking better care of their bodies. For me, its about uncovering the underlying meaning behind health and disease that resides in one’s birth chart and then empowering them with the tools to create better health and lifestyle changes that fit with their astrological makeup.
Q: How would you describe your astrological focus or area of study?
A: I am a modern medical astrologer with a focus on implementation of Natural Therapies to support the Natal chart. I study and read about all types of Astrology but with my background as a Naturopath my focus in clinical practice is medical.
Q: Can you give us a preview of your presentation?
A: I am really excited about this lecture, which is called Nature's 7 Healers and the Zodiac. I have taken a traditional Naturopathic philosophy about healthy living and mapped it to the Planets. Hopefully you will come away from this lecture with a new paradigm about each Planet and how you can support it to create a healthier lifestyle. It will be a fun, interactive talk with lots of "take home" ideas.
Q: Can you tell us about your teachers?
A: My original teacher Parampara Hughes was in Sydney, Australia, and I studies with her in the early 1990s. She was a wild woman who lived every day to its maximum potential. She encouraged me to combine my love for Astrology with my Naturopathic practice and I have her to thank for asking me to write and teach my first Medical Astrology class to her students. She has since passed on, but for me she will forever be the "One" who opened the door to this amazing world that I so love to be a part of.
Q: What are some books that influenced you in your study and practice of astrology? Can you tell us a little about how they were influential?
A: Jane Ridder-Patrick’s A Handbook of Medical Astrology, Robert Jansky’s Astrology, Nutrition and Health, Cornell's Encyclopedia of Medical Astrology, and Culpepper's A Modern Herbal are my four go-to books.
KIRA AT THE MANY FACES OF ASTROLOGY CONFERENCE
Kira is giving a lecture entitled Nature's 7 Healers & the Zodiac. In describing her lecture, she notes:
"In Naturopathy, there is a system of healing referred to as “Nature’s 7 Doctors.” They are the seven principles to live by to create health, wellbeing and balance in our lives. By combining these seven principles with the seven most inner planets, Kira will take you on a journey through your natal chart, understanding the symbolism and health impact that each of these planets can have on your health, and how we can use them to create more balance and wellness in our lives. Come enjoy a new application of medical astrology with a modern twist."
Her lecture will take place on Saturday, 02/18/17.
